Sadly, a lot of your German experience boils down to your house and who owns it.   I've met a lot of people who've been miserable because of a problematic house and an unresponsive and even dishonest landlord.  Though our legal and housing offices do their best, they can't always solve every issue that comes up.

Do know your tenant rights and do ask around about landlords.  Ask at the housing office and read up on google.  There are several sites that talk about these things.

Please leave your landlord experiences both good and bad in the comments section so that we can help others.  Check the comments for bad landlords!  You don't want those kind of headaches.

Warning! Do not rent from H-J Dahlmann in the GK area in Germany. He has been removed from the American housing list. He has a history of taking most of the deposit, two months rent, without merit and then telling Americans to sue him to get it back. The housing and legal offices' hands are tied about the money but they have taken him off of this list. He also has overcharged Americans in the end of year reconciliation bill by several hundred Euro. He seems meek and mild but he is very wise and he will steal your money. Please check the name of your landlord and DO NOT RENT FROM H-J DAHLMANN!

There are a lot of Dutch landlords that do the same thing. But I think that because of new management in the housing office things will start to get better for the folks renting from the dutch.

Theo Klassen is wonderful. He has at least 2 houses in Laffeld, and possibly other properties as well. We haven't done the end-of-stay reconciliation yet, but he kept his promise to fence and sod the backyard as soon as we moved in and is always very prompt to respond and come help when we need him. He makes sure to check with us before he comes over for any of his routine maintenance and is always very pleasant to our family.
